Marriage, 18th August 1850  at St John, Bedminster, Somerset
John Davis to Sophia Hillier

Father: John Davis

By the way, until the 1890's Bedminster was not a part of Bristol!
Historically it was part of Somerset.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

This might be him on the 1851 census Civil Parish St Mary Redcliffe Bristol
Transcription error John Darris ( Davis ) aged 19yrs occupation carpenter
Sophia Darris ( Davis ) aged 22
Edward Darris ( Davis ) aged 14 occupation brightsmith listed as son which would be impossible
There is a Baptism for an Edward Davis 4/6/1837 St Mary's Bristol father John Davis mother Eliza maybe his brother ?

There are two John Davis registered as baptised at St John, Bedminster about the time you suggest. One is the son of James & Mary ( 26 June 1831) and the other the son of William & Mary Ann (31 July 1831). May I ask where you obtained the birth date from?

Thank you, rosie17 and  Old Bristolian, I think now I will have trouble finding the right parents for John, the date  of his 31 Mar 1831 was given to me along with a lot of other info by one of his descendants as was the info Bedminster not  being part of Bristol but Somerset,  thank you to KGarrad for that correction.

Will just plod along in hope.

Thank you all

Regards

Cienna

Did John give Bristol as his pob in the Census'? If so, Bedminster might be a red herring as far as his birthplace is concerned (although many might give "Bristol" instead of "Bedminster" as their pob). Bedminster although officially part of Somerset until the late 1800s was a suburb of Bristol (and easy walking distance) from the Middle Ages. I did look at Bristol baptisms too, but couldn't  find a John Davis, son of John fir the right time either

John and Sophia emigrated to Australia in 1854 - so not on any UK census after 1851?! ::)

All I have is what was given me by one of his descendants, I have nothing else to go on except the dob in Bristol so maybe this is wrong and he was born elsewhere, his marriage to Sophia Hillier and they did go to Australia in 1854 both dying in Melbourne, Victoria.

John's father was down as John but no mother's name, siblings are also on a second  list of names I have come across.

Eliza, unknown birth.

Elizabeth, 1835 Bristol.

Edward Francis, 1837 Bristol

Ann, 1839 Bristol.

Cheers
