Hair Powder Certificates, Birmingham - What Were They?
« on: Monday 03 February 14 17:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I've just found a couple of entries in lists of Hair Powder Certificates. These were Issued in Birmingham to my 5x gt grandfather Thomas Longmore in 1795 & 1797.

Thomas Longmore of Dale End, Birmingham, Cert No 1256 issued 24th June 1795 & Cert No 954 issued 18th April 1797. On both he is described as either Householder or Housekeeper.

What exactly did this allow/entitle him to do?

Did it allow/entitle him to use powder on wigs/in hair or something different?

Have I answered my own question?

I have never come across these before, so a completely new area for me.

I know that the Thomas Longmore in Dale End is him, as I have other documents (jurors lists, trade directories etc) showing him as a brassfounder in Dale End at this time.

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

It was simply a form of tax. The certificate cost a guinea and it proved the tax had been paid.
