Coulson - Gunwalloe
« on: Wednesday 03 September 14 22:38 BST (UK) »
Hi all - my 4 x great grandmother Mary Coulson was buried at Gunwalloe on 15 Sep 1814, her age was given as 50. During her time at Gunwalloe she gave birth to 3 base children. Martha (1796-1798), Martha (1799-1873 my 3x great grandmother) & Mary (Bap 1801 & married William Thomas in 1829).

That's as far as I can go with Mary. I've looked at the children's baptism entries & there is nothing to indicate the name(s) of the childrens father(s) so I'm resigned to going no further with that but I also can't find any details of Mary's birth or, therefore, of her parents. Can anyone help or point me in the right direction please?

there don't seem to be many Coulson entries at Gunwalloe, but there was a Joseph buried 6 Dec 1852 aged 71. The 1851 census shows his birthplace as Falmouth - he was an unmarried ag lab living at Chyanvounder.

His baptism would look to be this one, although not an exact match for age

which leads to this marriage in Falmouth of a Joseph Coulsen & Mary Hendy

So perhaps the Mary Coulson having children in Gunwalloe was a widow. And perhaps she returned to her place of birth when widowed as there's a baptism for a Mary Hendey 23 May 1762, daughter of Mary, no father noted.

Thanks osprey. I'd noticed Joseph Coulson but didn't look any further at him as he was an unmarried ag labourer from Falmouth. Your theory sits quite well & is something that I hadn't considered. I think I now need to have a closer look at Joseph's parents. Many thanks.

he may not have married, but he is named as the father on a baptism
