Barn(e)s baptism in Busckfastleigh look up
« on: Wednesday 22 October 14 16:50 BST (UK) »
Hello
Could anyone going in please take a look to see if Richard and Celia Barns/Barnes were baptised in Buckfastleigh possibly to John and Ann. I would take a stab at it being somewhere between 1815 and 1825. Thanks

In 1851 Staverton Devon Census, Celia (27) was living with Samuel Hayman (26) - both Buckfastleigh born, and daughter Mary A aged 1, born Staverton.
Still no sign of Richard!

Try contacting Colin Evans, Buckfastleigh OPC (on line parish clerk). He may have access to parish records not generally available. Sorry, I do not know how to give you the link but Google "Genuki Buckfastleigh.

Hi Philip. Thanks for the info. Ties up with Richards marriage where a witness is Celia and his father is John a Woolcomber. Must be his sister. Just need to find him now!!! Have Celia on many a census until her death in London.

Hi Brentor boy. Sent message to Colin nearly 2 weeks ago but no reply as yet.

Welcome!  Yes, Richard is rather elusive. If he is missing from censuses it suggests a possible early death or emigration. If you like to let me have details of his marriage/spouse, I'll have another look for him as well.

Hi. I have him 1841 in Ugborough age given as 20, married 1843 when he was living in Buckfastleigh and dead 1845 !!! He did however leave a daughter Elizabeth from whom I am ultimately descended. From his marriage I know his father (John, Woolcomber) and witness Celia (now confirmed as his sister). They all seem to be from Buckfastleigh so I am assuming he is also. It would be the final piece of family confirmation. Then I can start to go back in time. Regs, Allan

I've just seen his 1843 marriage and 1845 death - Totnes Reg district.
There a South Brent baptism for Elizabeth Barnes, 25 Jun 1843, parents Richard & Elizabeth - may or may not be her.
There's an 1863 South Brent marriage, Elizabeth Barnes (father Richard) to a William Andrew Sparkes. South Brent is just down the road, between Buckfastleigh and Ugborough.
I guess you have Richard's widow and daughter Elizabeth in 1851 and later censuses. Richard/Ann (born c.1800) are less easy to find, maybe the Devon Family History Society are able to help.
