Ancestry doesnt have any meaning for a Scottish Rines - just Greek and anglicaized German.

http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/Fact.aspx?&fid=10&fn=&ln=Rines

House of Names also says that its German in origin.

I cant find anything that could be of use, sorry.

X- we're following each other!  There is a Robert Rines who does Loch Ness monster research.  Perhaps the origin is German- they must have invaded at some point- everybody else did! ;D

Thanks for searching, Liz.  It really gives me a place to start.  They appear in the US by early 1600's, so I start with earlier entries at Scotlandspeople site.
Thanks again :D

Joan,

You will have your work cut out if you are searching for early 1600s or pre 1600 records!

Incidentally, there are more records on ScotlandsPeople for the spelling RYNES than for the spelling RINES.  But none on SP under either spelling at the start of the 1600s or earlier.

There are some records in the 1500s in England in the IGI on FamilySearch - and other possible spelling variants might include RHINES, RHYNES, RAINES, RAYNES, RANES, REINS, RYANS etc, etc.

Have you Googled for the name?  Perhaps searching for RINES + Genealogy?  I see that there is a Rines forum on Genealogy.com
And a Rines website at  http://www.rines.net/genealogy.htm

Thanks Judy.  Yes, I've Googled - Jeeved - Dogpiled.  Been to LDS and Genforum & the rest of the usual sites.  Now I have to really dig!

Hallo Joan,

I am doing research for a friend and come up against the RINES surname! Googled and saw this thread on RootsChat.

Supposedly...a James WILSON was married to a Susan RINES.
They supposedly...had a son, John b abt 1833/34 in St Ola, Orkney.
His marriage cert to his 2nd wife clearly names his parents as above BUT I can find no trace of them. Nor can I find any baptism for John.

I just wondered if you'd had any further luck yourself.
Kind regards
Suzie
