Andrew Thompson (Thomson)
« on: Saturday 02 August 14 14:45 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am wondering if anyone can shed some light on this person or find him and his wife on the 1871 Scottish census.

Andrew Thompson (Thomson) born c 1840 in Scotland (whereabouts unknown).
His wife was Elizabeth, born in Scotland (whereabouts unknown) around 1848.
Their son, James, was born in Scotland in 1870, but by 1881, the family were residing in 11 Waterworks Road, Sunderland, where Andrew was employed as a general labourer.
The couple had another three sons by this time; Archibald, born 1872 (Sunderland), Andrew, born in 1876 in Sunderland, and Alexander, born in 1878 in Sunderland.
The family remained in Sunderland and can be found there in 1891, before Andrew and Elizabeth disappear once more.

Their son, Andrew married a Sarah Brogden in Sunderland in 1900 and seemed to use the 'Thomson' spelling of his surname when registering his children.

Any help or information on the family would be very much appreciated.

Thank you

Sue

If James was born in Scotland in 1870 his parents date & place of marriage will probably be on the certificate. That would narrow it down for you. It may cost some money on Scotlandspeople but there cant be that many James Thomson's born in Scotland in 1870 with parents Andrew & Elizabeth. The father's occupation would help to narrow it down further.
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.

Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.

Family Search shows James Thomson born in Eccles, Berwickshire, 11-1-1870 to Andrew Thomson and Elizabeth Gibb, who married in Hume, Berwickshire, 21-6-1867.

That's the only one for the years 1869-1871 where all three names fit. However, best to check for any others on Scotlandspeople. They may have moved to England by the time of the 1871 census. In Scotland, the spelling "Thomson" is much commoner.

Archibald's 1872 birth certificate should tell you the maiden surname of his mother.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
