Newport on Tay Children's Home, Comerton
« on: Wednesday 08 May 13 15:16 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm trying to find background on this children's home which was open in 1901. I'd like to locate any records concerning the home and its staff and inmates. There is a Comerton Home on the map around this time near Leuchars but it no longer exists.

Has anyone else heard of it?

Hello Sarah

Comerton Home was funded by a Dundee charity and Dundee boys were sent there for, I think, two weeks. Mr and Mrs Peter Stark were the custodians during the period after the Second World War and I believe that they remained until it closed. The building is now a private house and is situated on the west side of the A92, south of Forgan, near Newport.

Regards

Ian

Hi
It appeared to open in 1893 and there are a lot of mentions in the newspapers of the time and later mainly about anniversaries of it opening, Christmas parties etc.
Findmypast has these newspaper records for credits or they might possibly be available elsewhere.

"Comerton House which has been acquired for thr purpose of a Convalescent Home for children of Dundee district"
"In a secluded spot adjacent to the Cupar road ,2 1/2 miles from Newport"
It was officially opened on the afternoon of 12th June 1893.
There appears to still be a Comerton House in the right area approx. if you google it.

Hi Sarah,
reading your post i wondered if you found what you were looking for? My aunt i think must have been in a home around 1915 in that area but i cannot find a way to get any records for that time,if you have managed i would be really interested in your method,if you do not mind.

Hi, In the 1960s two sisters (May and Shiela Walker of Wormit) ran the Home for children with special needs in the summer months.
The children came to stay for one week. On a Wednesday there was a bus trip to a park or the seaside with a picnic at lunchtime. Trips were to Craigtoun Park, Kingsbarns Beach, Crail etc.
I remember "helping" on a Wednesday in the late 60s. It was my first experience of meeting children who nowadays would be called disabled in some way.
I seem to remember being told that there was a trust based in Crieff or Perth which ran the home for holidays.
The sun always seemed to shine at Comerton. The house was surrounded by gardens and lots of large fields.
