Hi Ballydw,

I had  a look at the rootsireland site and I found a marriage for Mary  Gumbleton in 1863 in the parish of Ladysbridge, Ballymacoda so this would be in the right area.

However when I added William Flynn it didn't seem to be a match.  I put William Flynn /O'Flynn and
nothing came up for this name.

Might be worth spending the €5 on the cert through the site or if you are near enough to the
church they might look up the records for you.

Mary

Hi Mary, thank you for the information. I have passed it on to the lady in Canada who has been years searching for gggrandparents marriage. Mary gumbleton was born in the area of the record you found.  Maybe the husbands name has been recorded incorrectly as happened with my own grandparents but it was the christian name not surname. Appreciate your help. Regards Frances :)

Just a tip when using the RootsIreland website search index.

Instead of entering values into "Surname" and "First Name",  leave those blank and enter the values into "Spouse's Surname" and "Spouse's First Name".

You will then get back all hits against that name.  For example, doing this with Mary Gumbleton (and ticking County Cork) brings back the following 6 hits: William Sheehan 1834; Thomas Murphy 1848; Patrick Daly 1852; John Ahern 1855; James Wall 1863; William Fitzgibbon 1870.

No Flynn, I'm afraid.

Then, if I have found a marriage that looks like what I am after, I reverse the process to see if the name actually is (in this example) Mary Gumbleton or if it is a variant (RootsIreland makes a stab at variants when you enter a name).

So for example, if I had been looking for a Mary Gumbleton / William Sheehan marriage, I would typically enter Mary Gumbleton  into "Spouse's Surname" and "Spouse's First Name" and from the 6 different hits received back, I would then enter William Sheehan into "Spouse's Surname" and "Spouse's First Name" (ticking County Cork of course) and restrict the year to 1834.  This time, four hits would come back, of which one would confirm that the name is indeed Mary Gumbleton (if a variant name, then this would show).

Hope this makes sense.

The only thing I can add, in the absence of finding a church marriage for William and Mary, is that both daughters' baptisms (Mary 1864 and Ellen 1866) were in Midleton RC parish.

Gaffy thank you for your input. All records apart from the marriage have been found. The marriage wasnt in midleton checked the registers - it is baffling???? I am wondering maybe St Patricks church in Lower Rd Cork as I do know a lot of midleton people were married there as were my own parents. Will give the church a call & see how I go. Regards Frances :)

Well, hopefully I have avoided Euros being spent on the 1863 Mary Gumbleton / James Wall marriage, that is why I posted.
