Singing Competition in Catrine
« on: Monday 20 January 14 14:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone I have a gold medal won by my greatGmother, Margaret Paterson on the 2nd June1905 for winning a Singing competition held at Catrine. I am  assuming that Catrine is in Sorn, Ayrshire.
Margaret Paterson was born in Lanarkshire so I'm assuming that she travelled to Catrine to take part in this competition.
The medal is inscribed- Catrine, Singing Competition,1st Sophrano Prize, won by Margaret Paterson,2nd Jan.1905.
So, does anyone know of such a competition being held in the Ayrshire town of Catrine or is it another Catrine somewhere else in Scotland ? Please help Thanks

Are Searcher.
PS Did the engraver misspell Soprano or is it an earlier spelling?
Buchanan (Glasgow), Allerdice(Ayrshire), Russell & Cameron(Lanarkshire&Dunbartonshire), McTurk Brown,  Menzies, McQuaker, Thomson(wigtownshire),Wallace

Hi, I also have a gold medal (in the shape of a shield) which was won by my great grandmother in 1905 - it is inscribed 'Catrine Singing Contest. Won by M. Crawford 1905'. There are no further dates inscribed - just the year. It's definitely the Ayrshire Catrine as my family is from the area but I'm not sure if there is another Catrine in Scotland.

I hope this helps.

P.S  I'm a singer myself and have not heard of another spelling of soprano so I am assuming it was the inscribers mistake.

I don't know for sure but when I read your post I wondered if it was some sort of Burns contest.

Hi,

Is the date on the medal 2nd June 1905 (which was a Friday) or 2nd Jan 1905 (which was a Monday)?

If June could the competition have been linked to an Agricultural or Rural Show?

Looby :)
