Suckling
« on: Friday 07 August 09 09:07 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I've been helping a work colleague with her tree. Her Mother and other members of her family insist there is a connection with her Suckling ancestors and Maurice(1726-1778 Royal Navy) and William Suckling(1730-1798Customs),Nelson and Robert Walpole.
The earliest Suckling i have found is Edward Suckling born in Brentwood Essex abt 1802. In 1841 he is listed as a Coal Carter living in Springfield Essex but aged 30 which would make his birth 1811. The other census returns have him born in 1802ish. In 1881 he is listed as aged 79 retired coal carter Springfield Essex. I am reasonably sure i've got the right Edward. But I can't yet find a connection between the two families.

Is there anybody out there that can understand what i'm going on about?
Does this make sense?

Hi
Remember that all ages in 1841 were rounded down to the nearest 5 so age 30 could mean up to 34.  Ages on census do vary too so you may be on the right track.
Have you looked on www.familysearch to see if there is a suitable baptism in that area for him?        Did the others leave wills?   Are they mentioned on the A2A site?
Family rumours are not always true.  Mine always insisted we were related to Captain Cook - there were Cooks but not anything to do with him!

Hi,

I had found him on familysearch born Brentwood 1802. No wills found on a2a listed for Suckling that would relate to mine.

I told my colleague i had my doubts based on what we had found. Certificates she brought in confirm the info i had found.

Thanks for your reply

Hi Mike

Maurice and William Suckling had a sister, Catherine, who married Rev. Edmund Nelson in 1749. They were parents of Horatio Nelson.   :)    There was a younger son christened 'Suckling'.
I remember that there was a connection with Sir Robert Walpole.  Think that Catherine's mother was his grand daughter.
Not an expert but read about the family some years ago and made a few notes.  ::)
Had been told that we had a connection to the Nelsons.   :P
Probably a case of one of the Revs in the family conducting one of the marriages!  ;D

Good luck with your search.

My Grandfather was Simon John Suckling, sometimes listed as just John, born 1888 in Birmingham, Warwickshire. He was the son of John and Mary Elizabeth Suckling (Knee). Any links out there?
Thanks
