The problem is if that information on the 1921 census is right - they say they emigrated in 1907 which was before his wife died, if that is her death in 1909.

Yes ... Strange. Unless he wasn't actually married to Alice and that's why they left? The passenger list to Canada was 1910. Somewhere else in this thread it sats that they claimed to have emigrated in 1907, but I can't remember where ... It's getting late, I know :-)

That was the bit I found it was in the 1921 cenus image. I cant find a marriage, so perhaps he did leave his wife. Mind you as you said the passenger list, which is the official document is definitely 1910, perhaps they just forgot when they arrived and took a guess.

The answer might be to get that 1909 death cerificate and see what that says and who registered the death.

You are welcome.

Interestingly, the following person was born in Writtle, Essex
1901 England Census, Writtle, Essex
Bertram Lingard, born c1891, Writtle, Essex
Parents:  William & Mary M Lingard.  Brother Frank J.

Could the families have known each other in England?  ???

Just received the death cert of Elizabeth Ann Hall. She was indeed the wife of William Edwin Hall who was present at her death 10th August 1909. So....who WAS Alice Maud as still can't find marriage cert  :-*
