If you go to this page, you can click on an email link to the present Rector who may be able to help further with the history of the chuch. It is a round tower church which of course is more Norfolk than Suffolk, so perhaps the St Mary the Virgin does refer to a church in a parish across the Waveney?

Weybread brought out a village book in 2008 (pub by Lever Press Ipswich) called 'The Parish of Weybread -then & now' written by Graham Gibbs. It says the church registers date from 1599 & it is in records from about the mid 19th century that the church is referred to as St Andrew's but was centuries previously known as St Marys. Reason n/k but noted that the old Mendham Priory which had a lot of influence on surrounding parishes, was also known as St Mary's Priory .
Recommend the book, a little snapshot of a much loved Suffolk village.
