Marlowes Chapel/Bury Mill End
« on: Sunday 19 August 12 18:07 BST (UK) »
In 1870 my 2G.Grandparents were married in Marlowe Chapel (baptist).Do any photos or information exist about the chapel. Eliza Locke who married John Crew was down as a domestic servant and residence at the time was Bury Mill End.Does anyone know in this area who may have been likely candidates to be her employers in this area?

Hi

"Domestic Servants" were very common at that time.

It seems that you know all of this as you have posted a very similar query before?

Hello Ray,
Eliza was born in Evenley ,Northamptonshire. The Chapel is the Marlowes Chapel in Hemel Hempstead. Her father on the wedding certificate is Joseph Locke .I have not been able to establish a reliable birth or mother yet. There is a Eliza Age 12 living as a visitor in Brackley with a Joseph and Ann Williams .Annes maiden name was Locke so someone has suggested she may be a sister. However The parents in 1841 are John (not Joseph) and Sarah Locke (transcribed Look) .So the only reliable information I have on Eliza is from her wedding certificate and the census's that follow that.It states Bury Mill End as Hemel Hempstead on the certificate.
The query is slightly different as I am asking more about Marlowes Chapel and Bury End Mill area this time.Original queries were more about Corner Hall which I was trying to establish a link with Locke and Smith brewery as I was told they came from a wine and spirit background.I established that this was more likely to stem from the fact that John more than likely worked for Baldersons which was based in the CornerHall area at the time .
Thanks Hayley

The cottage at CornerHall I was pleased to discover recently is still there...I was informed on initial queries in the area that it would have been demolished with the B&Q and road developments.

Hi

I don't know if you had noticed but the cottage your relatives lived in is in the picture.

Revolve the camera and No9 (Lilac Cottage) is in view.

Thanks Ray,
As an added bonus the cottage is currently up for sale so I have been able to view inside the cottage on the estate agents website .
