Gertrude senior was Sadler

On 6 January 1938 a lady of this name set sail on the 'Rangitiki' in London bound for Aukland.  She was apparently travelling alone.  Her age was given as 65 and her address as Kingsbridge Road, Parkstone.
The passenger list shows her 'Country of Last Permanent Residence' as 'other parts of the British Empire' which doesn't tie in unless she had moved to NZ (or elsewhere) before and this was a return visit back to UK.

Hi John

Sorry not able to help much more with finding your Gertrude and her children.  :(

What I did find though in other passenger lists was a "Gertrude ROBERTS" whom I suspect may be the same lady who later travelled on to NZ in 1938 ??

Incoming passengers to UK :
Ship:   "Montcalm"
To Liverpool, ENG - from St. John, New Brunswick, Canada - arrived 10 January 1937.

Pass. # 24 - ROBERTS - Gertrude - 65 years [bc 1872 ] - no occupation stated
Address in UK :   Royden, Kempbridge* Road, Parkstone, Bournemouth
Last Country of perm. residence: ENG
Country of intended future perm. residence :   ENG
---------------------------------

[Notes:  * On passenger list image road name (typed) looks like "Kempbridge" rather than "Kingsbridge" ?   But there are similarities in name/ age/ and address given for the Gertrude travelling to NZ in 1938 ?    And maybe the reference (in 1938) "last residence - other parts of the British Empire" refers to Canada ?]

I don't have access to Canadian or USA passenger lists so unable to determine when this woman arrived in Canada ... or from where.   Just adding this detail in case you want to investigate further.   ;)

Hi again John

On Canadian Passenger Lists 1865-1935 (@ ancestry.com) and searching on Gertrude ROBERTS the index returns a listing for "Port of Arrival - St. John, NB, Canada" - which may be worth following up on ?
--------------------
As well as searching New Zealand records, I also looked to see if your Gertrude and her children may have settled in Australia, but nothing at all positive came from that.  :(
[I somehow think though that the lady ex. Parkstone, is not the Gertrude you are seeking. ]

My suggestion would be though that you next try Canadian records (and the USA).
Gertrude's sons William and Joseph were of an era that they may have seen service in WW1 - so maybe worthwhile diverting search to see if there are records for them.

Good luck  ... and do let us know of your progress.   :)

Many thanks Lu.  It definitely looks to me that the lady who arrived from Canada in 1937 was the same one who left a year later and I can't get over that she was apparently living so close to my grandparents for that year. I will certainly be following up on these leads you have turned up: I can see that it might be clutching at straws but I have to eliminate as many possibilities as I can.  I did start looking for the boys in WW1 records but plan to follow up on that as our local library has just subscribed to a new site for these. I will certainly let you know if I ever find anything further and thanks again for your help.

Also apologies to any Aucklandonians for my spelling of their town!

John
