Desperate for Help
« on: Saturday 31 August 13 12:51 BST (UK) »
Not sure about anything but searching for an Uncle who may have been WW1.
FindMyPast has a William Thomas Davies Rank - LT. Reg. - South Wales Borderers 6th Battalion.Died of wounds 13th April 1918.
That is all the info.
Tried Web-site of those that died but cannot find anything on this William Thomas Davies and desperate for info. even to eliminate him.
Cannot find any info. of Uncle after 1911 Census when single age 21 but cannot quite believe he would have risen to rank of LT in short time but what do I know. Perhaps he did. Occupation on 1911 Census was "Miner Hewer". Any help out there even to eliminate him? Many thanks, Syljun

Thanks Nanny Jan, Another wrong one. My search goes on. Concentrating on breaking down long standing brick walls.

Not sure if this is helpful but there is a MIC for William Thomas Davies that shows:
Welsh Regiment    34309 Corporal
South Wales Borderers Second Lieutenant
South Wales Borderers Lieutenant

The war diary for the 6th Battalion mentions a W.T. Davies 3 times:

20/11/16: 2nd Lieuts H L Thomas and W T Davies and 15 other ranks reported for duty as reinforcements.

6/4/18: Following Tempy 2/Lieuts promoted Tempy Lieuts from dates shown against their names:-
Tempy   2/Lieut   E.W.S. Kite      8/10/17
Tempy   2/Lieut   W.T. Davies     7/9/17
and made Supplement London Gazette 4/4/18.

15/4/18: Killed on the 13/4/18.

LOCRE HOSPICE CEMETERY was about 4 miles behind the lines at this time, so it would seem Lieutenant Davies was wounded, but sadly died the same day.

Is this your man?

Reference WO 339/79525

The WO339 files can be very empty, with little more than a copy telegram of a death, or can contain interesting correspondence. I read one last week with correspondence from the man's mother asking for his personal possessions and some replies saying they couldn't be found; and from his father in the 1920s asking why his medals still hadn't been issued.
