London rifles
« on: Monday 01 September 14 17:12 BST (UK) »
Hi
I have a medal card for someone which says they were in the 6 London R
I'm assuming this is the 6 battalion of London rifles
How do I find out whether he was 1/6, 2/6, or 3/6 so I can find out where they were and which war diary to download?
He transferred there from 12 Irish rifles in 1916
His regimental numbers are
6 London 6099
R Irish 13/43583

Thanks

Does the card have an entry to theatre date?
If he was entitled to 15 Star its 1/6th as 2/6th didn't deploy overseas till 1917.3rd were home based

Do you know if there's any way to find out when he joined the regiment?

http://armyservicenumbers.blogspot.co.uk/2008/08/6th-city-of-london-bn-london-regiment.html

According to site above between June andJuly 1916 at a guess
I think he would have gone to either 2/6th or 3/6th originally and forwarded to 1/6th to replace casualties after the Somme battles.(pure conjecture but likely considering 1/6th were at the frontline)

Thanks so much. I might go through the war diaries as well to see if there's any mention of soldiers being taken as pow
