There are, of course, people missing from every census so you may just be unlicky with Mary and James.

If you are looking on an online database it could be that they are simply mistranscribed - this is far more likely than them being missed I suspect.

Mary may have married by 1861 so we wouldn't know what her surname was.  I'll have a look and see what I can find.

Do you know that James (junior) kept the name Barker throughout his life?  Or did he possibly take the name of his adoptive father (if any)?

Hi Ticker,

James kept the name Barker and even named one of his sons after his father; James Stead Barker born 1885.

So he can't have been adopted I suppose.

Hello - I have a James Stead Barker in my tree born 9 August 1846 - son  of Richard Barker of Todmorden and Ann Stead of Pool.    Have we different people?
