POWELL - Radnorshire
« on: Thursday 25 October 07 22:04 BST (UK) »
hi all just getting started with family history and also computers so apologies for any mistakes.
Am tracing paternal dise of family. Got marriage cert of my great grandfather meredith Powell who was at the Welsh Harp Rhayader in 1897. His dad called John was a farmer. A witness was catherine ann powell but i am sure johns wife was mary. I have found mary and son meredith on 1871 census but no trace of John or any of them 1881/91/61.

any ideas please.

So glad found this site have spent a fortune not knowing where to look

thanks
wendy

You haven't given their d.o.b.
I have found a family in 1871
mary mother 48 -she is a widow (marr crossed out and widow entered)
Children Meredith 6, Daniel 2, Ann servant 15-all b. breconshire
is this the family?

oh thanks Yes this is as far as i have got. Meredith is my gt grandfather. He was born 1864/5. On the marriage cert in 1897 says his dad john powell. but i cant find him on any census and no more on mary either.

Usually -but not always - it is noted father (deceased) on marr cert-depends if the registrar remembers!

I will see if I can locate any "possibles" for the witnesses -often witnesses are brothers/sisters-but sometimes just friends

This is interesting!
1881
Llanwrthwl brecon
Address Penrhos
Edward hamer Head 33 M Lab Llanelwedd Radnor
Mary hamer wife 58 Llanwrthwl Brecon
Daniel Powell Stepson 12 Llanwrthwl Brecon

look who meredith was working for in 1891!!!

ages are VERY clear -looks like Mum got herself a toyboy!!!
She must have been widowed again and gone back to using the name Powell in 1901!
