Urray placename something like Allyndiggular or Alladigulas
« on: Thursday 02 January 14 16:26 GMT (UK) »
Found this on another site and it relates to (part of) an offshoot of my family which I am interested in.

Duncan McIver alias Campbell: b. Jan. 29, 1777, Allyndiggular, Urray
Angus McIver alias Campbell: b. July 13, 1779, Alladigulas, Urray  (father-in-law to one of my Gollans)

I suspect they are both the same place and very likely the spelling is wrong but I can't find anything on the old maps (though that's not too surprising as my eyes are poor)

Can anyone help?  Thanks in advance.

Try maps.nls.uk - scanned OS maps at high resolution & put in Urray in the Gazeteer box; there are 1:10560 [6 in to 1 mile] maps & 1:2500 [25 in to 1 mile]. Earliest I can see is 1873, haven't yet found a place with a similar name to that you seek.

ADDED:
The NAS have these:
[1] Reference   GD1/946/54
Title   Roll of ratepayers in the parish of Urray for the year 1856/57
This might give addresses

[2] Plans of Brahan Estate & Highfield Estate; if you knew which estate the place lay within then these plans might have small habitations marked [however you'd have to go to the Historical Search Room at General Register House in Edinburgh to see a digitised image of these plans, access to the originals is now limited although they will make a copy for a fee].

Could be a penmanship "thing" and it could be Aldgourie but the NLS map you want is Roy's 1747-55 which is extremely detailed.
I have turned off all email notifications, thank you.

Thanks for that Josey.  The rest of the children appear to have been born Brae of Spittal, Muir of Tarradale, Tarradale and Kilearnan but this one has me stumped.  The only place I could see with a "all" also had a "be" in front ie beall
