1871 Census Lookup please - WALKER
« on: Saturday 16 August 14 08:07 BST (UK) »
Hello list

I was hoping that someone who has access to the actual Census records could check on the following family please and tell me the actual name of the 14 year old son (listed as Governor).

1871 Census
Greenock West, Renfrewshire
66 Eldon St
R S Walker         51  Greenk, Renfrewshire;  Flesher
Agnes Walker     37  Langs, Ayrshire
R J Walker Jr.      16  Greenk, Renfrewshire
Governor Walker  14  Greenk, Renfrewshire
Margt Walker       12  Langs, Ayrshire
William Walker      40 [10?] Son;  Greenk, Renfrewshire;  Scholar
Agnes Walker        3  Greenk, Renfrewshire
Jessie Walker        8  Greenk, Renfrewshire;  Scholar
Marion Walker       2  Greenk, Renfrewshire
Ella Walker           11m  Greenk, Renfrewshire

I doubt his name was Governor...  ???

Just found them in the 1861 Census at N 20 St John Street, Greenock East
The same son is listed as Gorenna, aged 4.

Many thanks in advance

Hi ,
To check the original census you would have to go to Scotland's People which is a pay as

you view site. 30 credits cost £7:00  i credit to view and 5 to download -- very reasonable

and an easy site to manoeuvre through . I tried family search with parents as Robert S. Walker and

Agnes Crawford but only came up with three births for this couple .

FindMyPast have transcribed him as Walker Walker in the 1871 census, which isn't a lot of help. But they have transcribed him as Governor Walker in 1861. It's an unusual name, but not impossible.

Hello LibHastings

Going to the Genealogy Centre at the Mitchell Library on Wednesday and would be happy to have a look at the census record if you have not found it yourself.

Hard to find the children listed on Family Search index  :-\ Only 3 children showing to a Robert Stewart Walker and Agnes Crawford:

Marion 1869: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQ4N-W2N
Ella 1870: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQZ2-YYT
Louise 1872: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQ7X-BR7

Two marriages show for a couple with these names, but in locations that connect to the censuses you have, just the year is a question mark:

1855 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XT2D-3MS
1869 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYQC-CMS

Maybe the answer will be in the registrations of the children's surnames, particularly with the two obvious marriages showing for parents. I am guessing that the 1855 marriage may not have gone ahead  ???

You had a William aged 10 in 1871, although age mistranscribed on the index. I wonder if this is his birth entry indexed https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQT2-J7H

Daughter Janet, showing as Jessie (a common variant on the name) in 1871, is I think here https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQZL-GV3

One other here, a son David in 1865, likely died pre 1871? https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQYQ-1N5

....However, failing to find the other children born pre 1869 and the list from above, just searching with mother's name of Agnes Crawford.

This looks to be Robert Stewart Walker's death notice (if you hadn't come across it before):

Robert Stewart Walker of Orrok, feuar in Greenock, died at Orrok House, Belhelue, Aberdeenshire of 22nd August 1889. (GreenockTelegraph 23.8.1889)
