Researching Property in Caithness
« on: Friday 20 April 12 15:58 BST (UK) »
Is there a way to research who lived in a particular house without having the names of the people ?
I am trying to discover who lived in our farm.prior to 1860's.
It was rented out by a landowner whose family eventually sold on in 1950's.

Any help much appreciated

Hi WT ,

You could try the freeCEN website
It has the 1841 , 1851, and 1861 Census transcriptions for Caithness

You can do an address search on there
What information do you have ?

ev
Census information Crown copyright , All Census information from transcriptions - check original records , Familysearch/IGI is a finding tool only - check original records

Thank you ev, just tried freecen but came back with no results.
There is a possibilty that the farm changed it's name once out of Crown Estate hands.

You could find out from the valuation rolls. Remember that "farmer" was often used for a crofter and you can find several crofts of the same name on an estate.

I found one tenant in the 1901 Census,
Alexander Dunnet.
Civil Parish:-Olrig
address Hilliclay (farm name).

Think maybe the library the best bet ?
