Finding Welsh research very difficult!
« on: Monday 25 August 14 20:58 BST (UK) »
Most of the family I'm researching are English, but one branch come from Breconshire and Glamorganshire and I've quickly ground to a halt. There are so many people with the same names! For example,  I'm looking for a John Richards. His wife was Sarah and I've been trying to find his birth and their marriage without success. There are several John Richards, even in the one county and born within 2 or 3 years. I've found him on the census records without too much trouble, because he comes from a small place,  but births marriages and deaths are a different matter - knowing where  they would have been registered is tricky, working out which of several people with the same name is the correct one, having a strong suspicion that online indexers have made even more mistakes than usual in transcribing Welsh placenames.. ??? His wife is from Merthyr, and again there are several possibilities and I can see no way of narrowing them down. If anyone experienced in searching Welsh sources could give me any general advice as to how to approach this, I'd be grateful

One of John & Sarah's childrens birth certificates should give Sarah's maiden name which should help to find the marriage.

GenUKI has an index of place names, showing which Registration District was applicable at different times:
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/places/index.html

Also, use GenUKI to find the town/village/hanlet, and the entry should tell you in which parish it was?

Of course! Should have thought of that - thank you. Though I've a nasty feeling, from the process of elimination I've done so far that her maiden name is Evans, Davies or even Richards, same as her husband, so I may soon come to a halt again.
