I have copies of two birth registrations.

1.Robert Stewart GLASS, born 29th May 1871, in the Parish of Rhynie.

2.James Cumming GLASS, born 4th January 1875, in the Parish of Rhynie.

The mother of the boys was Jane GLASS.

Both registrations show "Illegitimate" under the given names.

However only in the case of the registration for James Cumming GLASS; to the left of this entry is an official stamp with stamped wording around its oval shape, (which I am unable to read) while inside the stamp is the handwritten word "Paternity".

Can anyone tell me please, why one entry should have this stamp and not the other?

And what exactly is the significance of the stamp? (The father was not named in either case.)

It sounds like there is a RCE on this record. If there is, you should be able to see it from the original record with the stamp. If you go onto Scotland's People web site, and look at how to access Register of Corrected Entry, it should show you how. This should open up further information.

Mmmmm.....I have had a look at the sites, but I'm not sure about that Malky. There are no reference numbers on my copy to make a link between any amended entry.

It could be there was a court case regarding the paternity of the child that ended up not proven.

There is a RCE on this record. Look above the actual record and it wil show on the Right hand box. "View RCE, 2 credits" The RCE shows who the father was as per Sheriff Court decision.

Thank you so much for your response. I think I can now see how the system works.

It is a long time (years) since I used the website so am assuming that I will have to start from scratch. As I don't need the birth registration, can I by pass this and go straight to the RCE?

As you've already purchased & viewed the birth certificates you will be able to see them anytime by clicking on viewed (If I remember correctly) certificates.They will remain there. Once you open them you have the option of spending a further credit to view a RCE.  You can also place them in a timeline if you wish. You can also see previous searches you have made. This is useful if you find out that a particular person you dismissed does turn out to be a relation & you need to see the certificate.:)

Hi

Thanks for posting this query and the responses because I have now discovered that one of my 1874 birth certificates had a paternity stamp as well so I paid for the RCE and the father was revealed through a Sheriff Court action in Aberdeen 6 years after the birth.  I had always suspected who the father was but now it has been confirmed.
