Doing the free search on Ancestry (I don't have a current subscription, so I can't see the actual record), there is a naturalization record for James in Seattle, 1935. 

Don't see him there on the 1940 census though.  According to the obit from the Forestry magazine, he came back to BC in 1942, so he ought to be somewhere in Washington on the US census in 1940
