Where does the illegitimacy come in?

What was Alexander's occupation on the birth record?

Does it give a date and place of marriage?

Have you found them on 1911 census?

Where did you find his service record?

Can I ask why you think that this Alexander McKay is definitely your relative?  I would think that it is a relatively common name and there may have been more than one in the Black Watch?

Have you checked the Soldiers' Wills on Scotlands People if you think he is the chap who died in 1915?  If there is one, that may give us more information?

How would Annie know he was deceased when he didn't marry her mother or record Annie on his service record?

Possibly from this article..

WW1
Pte Alexander MacKay
Glasgow Herald 7th April 1915
News was received in Dunblane yesterday of the death in France on April 1 of Private Alexander McKay, of the Black Watch, who was shot through the head in the trenches.  Another Dunblane man Matthew McKee was beside him at the time.  McKay only lived 5 minutes.  He served in the South African war, and came through the dark night of Magersfontain without a scratch.  He was a well known football player, and was a member of the BlackWatch team which won the Army Cup.  Until a year or two ago he figured in the Dunblane team.

I have not been able to source the original newspaper article.
I have a photograph of the original (my cousin has the original) of the army football team, all members in the photo perished in WW1 France and Flanders.

As always Patvp

There is still no direct link between that soldier and Annie

Annie's father may have been killed in the Boer war
