Aitkenhead Farm
« on: Tuesday 25 February 14 10:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi. Does anyone have any information about Aitkenhead Farm and an Aitkenhead close by. They are shown on William Forrest's map, where Renfrewshire impinges Lanarkshire, next  to Gorbals, Rutherglen and Curmunnock. I have been unable to find anything on Google. Were they owned or tenanted by Aitkenheads or is it just a place name. My family is mainly (1700 -1800) in E.Kilbride, Blantyre, Glassford and Avondale. But this is not far away. Many thanks.
Aitkenhead, Purdon, Buick, Fairweather, Todd, Moresby.

Tasman ; I think you're looking for AIKENHEAD - no "T".   In my old home area of Kings Park, Glasgow, there was an Aikenhead Farm (actually called Meikle Aikenhead) - between Hundred Acre Hill and Kings Park.  Kings Park was formed from the grounds of Aikenhead House - which you will find with Google.
Also, the Lanarkshire 1896 OS maps show the house and farm.   My old school was built on the farm site, and the house is now apartments.

See here http://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Aikenhead for a discussion of the name.

(BTW - Aikenhead is is Lanarkshire, not Renfrewshire - by about a quarter mile!)
NEILSON - Erskine/Bishopton, Renfrewshire and Glasgow
BROWN - Hamilton, Lanarkshire
CAIRNS - Hamilton, Lanarkshire
FINDLAY - Kirriemuir area, Forfarshire/Angus
PORTER - Tobermore, Derry, Ireland

Hi Greenrig. Yes, I am aware of Aikenhead House or Castle (perhaps derogatively called). Alexander and Annie went bankrupt and the farms were sold or acquired. No, this is AiTkenhead Farm and Aitkenhead on the map. I tried to include as an attachment but go myself into trouble. Thanks.

Aitkenhead House and Farm was held by Gordon, Esq. (as noted on the map).  Aitkenhead Farm later became Aitkenlea Farm and Aitkenlea Dairy.

Hi Don the map man. Following my interest, which you started!, I bought John Thomson's map 1832 then William Forrest's map of Lanarkshire 1816. On the latter, 'part of Renfrewshire', contains Aitkenhead Farm and Aitkenhead. Did this section become part of Lanarkshire at a later date, or is it another entity. Thanks.

Yes, parts of Cathcart have been been back and forth a bit and like most absorbed into Glasgow.
