Cemeteries in Llanllyfni area
« on: Tuesday 11 December 12 16:46 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone could tell me which of the chapels or former chapels in the Llanllyfni, Nebo/Nazareth area have graves. I am looking for family gravestones and am compiling a list of chapels to visit. Also where would a chapel member be buried if their chapel didn't have a graveyard. Any help most gratefully received!.

Hi,

I have a register of burials at Salem Chapel, Llanllyfni between the years 1866-1992, which was produced by Gwynedd Family History Society.

If you care to mention some names/dates I will see if the details are there.

Alan

Thank you for your reponse -my problem is that I don't know the years of death so was planning to go and look in any potential cemeteries to see what I could find. I especially would like to find the grave of my great-grandmother Hannah Roberts who lived at Bronhaul, Llanllyfnu before she died sometime after 1924 and probably before 1935. Also her husband Robert who died in the 1890's when the family lived in the Nebo/Nazareth area. Please don't worry if that is all too vague.

Hi,

Found the following -

Grave of Robert Roberts of Fron Haul - buried 15 June 1896 age 45 (Grave No 872) and
Evan Roberts of Fron Haul - buried 2 June 1894 age 13 months (Grave No 798)

No immediate sign of Hannah Roberts of Fron Haul - could she have been known by a different first name or did she re-marry after Roberts death?

Hope these details help

Alan

Thank you so much -I think this has to be our family -the Bronhaul or Fron haul can't be just coincidence.
There are a couple of family graves in the cemetery just south of Llanllyfni and one has the inscription
 'Dri o Blant
Rt a Hannah Roberts
Bronhaul, Llanllyfni...'
and it then goes on give details of 3 of her children who had died including my Gt Uncle who was killed in the 1st World War. I am assuming she put the gravestone there but there is no grave to her in that cemetery.
Can you tell me where Salem chapel is and whether the graveyard is easily accessible -also are the graves numbered or is there a plan somewhere. I am planning to visit Llanllyfni tomorrow so will be able to have a look for myself. Also do you know if there is a war memorial.
Thank you again for your help.

Hi,

Unfortunately I live in England and whilst I have family buried at Salem Chapel I have never visited. It is on my list of things to do.

I would suggest you Google it - I found a photograph of Salem Chapel, High Street, Llanllyfni on peoplescollectionwales.co.uk web site.

I assume the graves are numbered as there is no map in the booklet I have.

I am sure the local people will be able to guide you in the right direction.

Good luck

Alan

There is a memorial at Nebo School. It has 'William R Roberts, Pant Gwyn 15 9 1915'  I'm having a struggle to positively identify him to that date at the moment.

Is he your great uncle? If not, what is his name/date died.

Incidentally, in case it's another branch,  there is a Thomas P Griffiths, (father John P Griffiths,Noel St, Lodge Lane, Liverpool) who died of dysentery with 11th Bn RWF on 24 6 1917. His mother is shown as Ellen Griffiths, Bronhaul, Llanllyfni on CWGC. This could be a different Bronhaul of course

Hi again,

I've just been going through my book again to try and track down "Hannah". Having looked between 1924 and 1935 for "Roberts" burials, a number of possibilities appear -

1) There is an Elizabeth Roberts of Post Office who died age 90 and was buried Dec 30 1929 (Grave Number 1256) -
or
2) Margaret Roberts of Rhedyw Road who died age 68 and was buried 15 March 1927 (Grave Number 1238) - she wasn't a Chapel member
or
3) Elizabeth Roberts of Bodawel who died age 92 and was buried 26 Sept 1931 (Grave Number 1271) or
4) Lizzie Roberts of Manchester House who died age 71 and was buried 24 March 1933 (Grave Number 1286)

Can you find here on the censuses which may confirm her age and identify one of these deaths as your Hannah?

Alan
