Great House FArm Pendine - Rees/james
« on: Tuesday 23 February 10 17:29 GMT (UK) »
Been doing a distant cousins line and have got back to rees who were at Great House Farm Pendine.

John Rees b 1768 married Sarah James b 1755 (her parents William James and Margaret Lloyd also of Great House).

It was a very large old farmhouse and I've found a picture on the geograph.org website http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/940166.

however can't find anything about its history, who lived there etc on web - wondered if anyone knew anything about it?

Have found the people mentioned above referred to in Mary Curtis's book on Laugharne - and the fact they are buried at Pendine Church.

See this link about the Vaughan family of South Wales:

http://www.cenquest.co.uk/Bas%20Peeps/Vaughans.htm

which says that in 1753 Gwynne Vaughan of Jordanston Pembrokeshire Esq purchased Pendine Great house but that by 1807 it had been sold. Perhaps this is when the Rees family took over the farm, but perhaps they leased the farm from a Landowner.

Coflein say the house is probably 17th Century. Would be worth a visit to the Archives!

By the way in 1881, the farm was 347 acres, and farmed by John Garratt and his Sister and Brother-in-law Sarah and John Lloyd.

I was wondering if you were still about . I've been doing my own genealogy for quite some time but my father's mother's family, especially on her own mother's side was always an unknown but now I know that I go back to the same family at Great House myself..
