McLew's of St Ninians
« on: Sunday 21 June 09 06:30 BST (UK) »
Hi
Following a new branch that married in New Zealand
John McLew married Grace Brown NZ
brother RObert
Looks like I have found them in 1851 census, which is very hard image to read
Family
Moses McLew age 52 born?
Chaterine wife 37, born ?
children:
Robert 13, Ann 10, John 6  ??it says born Stirlingshire, Stirling. Does that make sense
Sorry completely out of research comfort zone here.

Anyone know this family? any connections
Many thanks
Althea in NZ  ;D

Update, Moses was married to Catherine McPherson who was born Killing, Perthshire.
Moses father was Robert McLew born Sterling about 1777 and his father was David McLEw born about 1757
(from another researcher)

I too have Moses McLew in my tree and the two NZ brothers.  I set up a flickr.com group to post some old pictures of the McLews of Palmerston.

Do you have any old pictures you could contribute to the group?

Greg

Hi there...I am a rank amatuer when it comes to tracing
My family history...but came across this site when I googled the name McLew
Which was my granny's maiden name...she lived in Palmerston..Otago...and ger name was Winnifred Chapman...my mother was one of her seven children.
Thanks to you guys..I now know that my great grandads name was Moses McLew!!
...and can now trace my ancestry back to the 1750's....Wow...Im so excited :)

Vertigo

You can see transcriptions of 1841 and 1851 censuses on FreeCEN. Catherine's birthplace is shown as Killin and Moses' as Drymen.

I have McLew connections in Drymen and surrounding Parishes back to the late 1600's and these names are very common.
I go on holiday tomorrow morning at 5.00am so any further reply will have to wait until after 7th.July.
Sorry, but I must switch of PC now !!!

Hello Vertigo,
Back from hol's and caught up with backlog at last.
McLew, with variations, was quite strong in Stirlingshire but not so now. First names are repeated and repeated so your list is very familiar.
My connections are mainly in Balfron Parish, Killin Parish and Kilmaronock Parish in the 1800/1900's.
In the 1700's they are in Drymen Parish.
@ 1714 there is an inter-marriage between a David McLew in Drymen P. and a Margaret McLew in Balfron P. with a marriage contract which I have yet to locate.
David (in Drymen P.) appears to be a brother of John who is my forebear. Margaret (in Balfron P.)  is the daughter of Walter whose family, according to a stone in Balfron Parish Church, have been there from 1600.
John, David, Robert and Moses appear in most generations.
My John McLew m. Janet Leny and their 5th.son Robert m. 1.Agnes McLew 2.Mary Monteth.
A George, John and Janet are born to Agnes followed by a David, Robert (1785), William, Daniel, Margaret and Moses born to Mary.
Robert b. 1785 m.1827 Janet Donaldson and my line continued with son David.
The Stirlingshire Sasine Minute Books and Registers and other legal records have lots of McLew (with variations) entries as did several of the Parish and Presbytery Minute Books.

In 1989 I was in contact with a Mrs.B---e in New Zealand but I have not had word since shortly thereafter and in recent years have not spent time on this line.
We might connect at some point ?!?

Hello David
Bob Campbell is my name from Perth Western Australia. Angus and Christian are  my Great, Great , Grandparents. My Line comes from their son David Campbell, their grandson,David McLew Campbell and their great grandson Reginald ( Les) Campbell who is my father. My eldest son is call David. He was named before I knew any of the the family tree. Which line of Angus and Christian to you come from?
In my research I have not been able to find any further information on Angus' parents apart from their names John Campbell and Catherine Kennedy. Any clues?
Kind regards
