It certainly looks like relefe. I wonder if the family were poor and received parish relief?
Best wishes, Judy :-))

Have you looked to see if there are any following children's births born to this couple ?
Maybe they will have this word on too !  Dolly

You've just read my mind - was going to ask that too ;D

if they did have poor 'relefe' it could be on the other childrens.  It doesn't look like an occupation for William and I can't think of anything in the usual Latin words that appear on parish records that would cover it if we are looking outside it being an English word.

Interesting suggestions .... but still puzzled!

To clarify: it is from the Needham (Norfolk) register. Original on familysearch.

Baptism of Sarah took place in May 1699 and is "as expected" ... "daughter of Wm and Susan his wife was baptised" etc. Only other baptism is earlier (1695) and just lists William and Susan's name.

Number of other records giving details of BIRTH appear on the same page (without anything other than husband / wife name) - appears to have been something instituted by (I suppose) new curate.

On first glance, I thought the word was 'rolofe'.A Google search shows it is a name (it's used on different entries as a first name or surname) and it appears to be quite uncommon.

I know it's not capitalised and doesn't appear to be contextually correct but, still, it's an idea.
Researching: Cronin / Nolan - Gortadrislig, Kerry
Finn/Clifford - Callinafercy and Scort, Kerry
Spillane - Milltown
Also:- Byrne / Tyrrell - Dublin

That would be Rolfe then I suppose? Problem is that it is not capitalised.

Have to say that I prefer the "relefe" or "relief" option .... but then I have never seen this put in a register, so perhaps equally unlikely! Unless it was some sort of note added by curate to determine that no charges would be made for baptism etc.?

Thanks for the option though.

I think it's Susan herself who is applying for relief - or someone on her behalf if she's very young - and the details of her birth are justification for her getting it - since generally you only got relief from your own parish.

Thanks for the suggestion .... yes, I think "relief" is the most likely option.
