James William Turvey
« on: Saturday 16 July 11 21:29 BST (UK) »
Am trying to find the birth certificate of James William Turvey (born 1853) in Bicester Oxford.

His marriage certificate to Hebe Louisa Deely (1878) says that his father was unknown.  Particularly interested in his mother and father's details.

Hi ERT and welcome to Rootschat, the birth registration for James William is this:-

James William Turvey June 1853 Bicester v 3a page 502

Purchase of this certificate will inform you of his parentage, although as of now I cannot locate him on the 1861 Census return?

Many thanks - how would I go about purchasing birth certificate?  Am new to this.

William James Turvey does not seem to appear on the earlier census. He is on 1891 and 1901 census.

Hi
Have found your James William on the OFHS BIC03 CD.  He was christened on 5 June 1853 at Piddington, son of Caroline.  No reference to a father, no mention of bastardy or being baseborn - other illegitimate births at the the time (and there were a few) all indicate that the birth actually was illegitimate so not sure why they do not state this for your James.

Caroline Turvey chr Piddington 7 Oct 1827 born Sept 10 1827 dau of William snr & Mary.  Lab.
She was buried 10 July 1832 aged 5.

Caroline Turvey chr Piddington 11 May 1834 dau William snr & Mary.  lab.

Marriage Piddington: William Turvey, widower to Mary Elliott sp 5 Feb 1822.  Witnesses: William Elliott, Joseph Elliott.  Banns.

Other children of William snr and Mary:

Isabella 23 Aug 1829 born July 29.  Bur 3 Feb 1833 age 3
Zilpah 4 Mar 1832
William 16 Aug 1835
James 15 Oct 1837
Joshua 14 April 1839
Lempster 6 Dec 1840 Bur 2 Oct 1841 8 Months.

Mary Turvey bur. 18 Oct 1841 aged 40.
Mary Elliott chr 19 Mar 1801 dau William & Sarah

William Turvey chr 19 Apr 1778 s. William & Susannah
This is probably your Caroline’s father as I could find no others in the records for Piddington that fitted the dates.

There are more Turveys going back so will try and post the rest of the info later today.

Hi,
A bit more info - not as straightforward as I'd thought.

Weston on the Green Parish Regs (OFHS BIC01).  Not far from Piddington.

William Tuffrey bach mar Susannah Clark otp  14 Nov 1769
Witnesses Richard Tuffrey William Forkner.  Banns.

No children for these 2 are in the regs and I could not find their burials so I would assume high possibility that these are the 2 in the Piddington regs with a slight variant on the name. (There was nothing further in BIC03, I do not have BIC02)).

I think it would be a good idea to ask someone with access to the Oxfordshire Marriage index to do a lookup to see if there are any other possibilities in the area.

If the above William is the right one then he was christened 17 April 1745 s. Richard & Mary. Weston on the Green.
Richard Tuffery mar Mary Coxhead Apr 25 1731 Weston on the Green. Banns.  There are no baptism records for these two in the parish.

Thankyou so much!  This information is amazing and gives me lots of leads to follow up.

This website was recommended by someone at the library and it has been great - like having a whole team of experts following up the family history.

Shame about the unknown father, but we will be able to look at the other line.

Thanks to everyone who has helped so far.    :)
