Castlebar death at a rugby football match, Queenan, c 1917
« on: Sunday 20 April 14 15:31 BST (UK) »
Hi

Would anyone have any archives of newspapers etc that may show a death of Patrick Queenan, he died about 1917 at a rugby football match in Castlebar according to his daughter. She was only about 5 years old at the time, she is now 101 and still going strong. Apparantly after her father's death, one of his brother-in-laws, either Martin Flanagan or Eddie Flanagan returned from the USA to help her mum care for the 6 children.
Thanks
Heather

Hello,
Would you think this may be the family?

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Addergoole/Lecarrow/718188/

It is recorded as Hanagan but looks like Flanagan possibly.

There is a marriage in Addergoole, 1905 Patrick Queenan and Catherine a Flanagan.
Parents named as Thomas Queenan and Margaret or Bridget Burke and Patrick Flanagan and Barbara Hegarty.

Castlebar library can be very helpful http://www.mayolibrary.ie/en/FindABranch/Castlebar/

Regards
Heywood

Possible death

You may have this information already as you only ask for the newspaper report and am hoping it's the right family of course.

Heywood

many thanks, yes that is the family on the 1911 and on the 1901 Katie is 17 and living with patt and Barbara Flanagan.
That certainly looks like the grave for them, thank you so much.
I will contact the library now that we have a closer date for his death.

Hi Heather,
Thanks to you and Heywood for the information you have posted.
Did you ever find out any more information about the death of Patrick Queenan?
I'm doing some research on behalf of my mother-in-law, Mary Pauline. Patrick was her grandfather.
According to his death certificate (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp search for Pat Quinan) he died on 21st Feb 1920. The cause of death was "Probably stomach cancer". Reports of his death at a rugby match may be incorrect as the death certificate states he died in Lecarrow, presumably at home.

I couldn't find any newspaper articles about his death, did you have any luck?

Regards
Tom
