Family Tree Programme online?
« on: Friday 31 October 14 11:10 GMT (UK) »
I know there have been hundreds of threads related to Family History Programmes (I have looked through numerous) but I thought if I specify my requirements then someone will surely know immediately what will suit my needs.

I am starting a brand new tree for the family of a friend of my daughter. I would like something very simple and basic that I can add to regularly and for the family to be able to access it and immediately see what I have added. So presumably this would be some kind of an online tree? :-\

I would like them to be able to see their family set out in a traditional tree diagram but I would also like a way that I can add copious notes plus census information etc for each family or for individuals, with no restrictions (ie not word or character limited).

Is there such a programme which perhaps requires a password which myself and the family could use to access the tree?

Most importantly it has to be easy to use and easy for me (who is very non technical) to gets to grips with quickly.

Though not essential I would prefer if it had a UK rather than a US bias (such as date set up etc).

And finally, as this is something I am doing for someone I don't know, I would prefer if this was a free programme.

I use Family Historian for my own tree but find it quite complicated and can never manage to send files successfully, and if I don't use it for a while I need to re read the instructions, and just get myself into a muddle.

Thank you for any suggestions.

Hi Ruskie,

I'm not an expert but reading your spec I think TribalPages (though American) would be ideal for your needs.

Definitely Tribalpages. If you find that you have more notes per person than is permitted with a free site then an upgrade is extremely cheap.

Hi Ruskie,

Have a look at this (part of my tree) for an idea of how it could look. I found it easy to use:

Annie.

P.S. Ancestry (UK) has a facility for a free tree but I think you have to try the 14 day trial 1st? If you were to do that, I would cancel it as soon as though to make sure they don't collect money from your account :-)

Thanks for the suggestion Jolyon, youngtug and Annie.

Annie, thanks for the link to part of your tree. That's the kind of simple layout I am looking for.

Are you able to 'customise' it at all? And are you able to view more generations at once? When looking at just two or three generations I tend to get a bit disorientated and forget whereabouts I am in relation to the entire tree.

I will definitely investigate TribalPages.  :)

Added: I see that there are various tree diagrams that I can choose, so that is good.  ;D

Agree with the others. I use TP for the same purpose as you require. I've done research for other people & sent them the link to TP so they can all see it wherever they are.

are you able to view more generations at once?

If you use the link I gave you, hover over the "View" button then click on "Tree" which will bring up the tree then just use the arrows to navigate.
