Stewart / Smith - Lossiemouth - Commerce Street
« on: Saturday 24 August 13 02:51 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help with the family of William Stewart and Isabella Smith who married on 17 Oct 1873. Their children were William born 1874, John, 1877, Isabella 1879-1892, Annie 1882, Robert 1884, George 1887 and James born and died in 1891.  George was my Grandfather.  We are trying to discover what happened to his brothers William born 1874 and John, born 1877.
Also if anyone can go back further with Isabella Smith's ancestry (born 13 Aug 1855 at Rathven), her parents were William Smith and Isabella Smith noted on the birth certificate as married in 1847. I have found a marriage entry for a William Smith and Isabella Smith for their marriage on 10 Nov 1848, but I have not been able to find one for 1847. If this is the correct marriage, it gives no clue to their parentage or ages at marriage.

Libindx has John Edward Stewart b. c1877 d. 21 March 1910 at 36 Commerce Street, Lossiemouth.
No parents names given.
It might be worth checking on Scotlands People.

Thank you very much for your reply.  That sounds like him.  My grandfather left 36 Commerce Street in about 1912/13.

No it wouldn't. It's before the magic cut-off date of 1855, when statutory civil registration started. I wouldn't be too bothered about a discrepancy of a year in the marriage date, because it's not unusual for the father to get that wrong when registering a birth.

As William and Isabella Sr both lived until after 1855, there should be death certificates which should tell you the names of both sets of parents.

LIBINDX http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp might have some references to the deaths of William and Isabella Sr.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
