I think you are right.  Tapenroot had 3 rooms.  I await from the Special Library in Aberdeen, which may take sometime, after they have looked at rental books.  Of course I will not be able to view these myself until next year on my visit to Banchory.

Thanks for the explanation Isabel. I had to give up on the search as it was getting late, but I was getting nowhere searching the NLS maps.

It does seem logical that the unnamed house was probably Tapenroot.

As Tapenroot appeared in the 1861 census I was attempting (unsuccessfully) to find it on a map of around the same time. I note the one you provided a link to was later than 1861. Have you checked earlier maps in case it was named then, and perhaps was unused and unnamed by the time of the 1885-1900 map?

I did look at earlier maps, but couldn't find any with that level of detail.

Agree - that map is excellent. I had no luck with earlier maps either.

Here's another link to the most detailed map I can find, and from roughly the right period. There are more buildings than I previously thought.

Thank you for that, yes I can see there are more buildings that I had thought.  I just can't wait until next August, to go exploring again.  Will let you know if I hear anymore about Tapenroot.

It is not Tapenroot, it is Tapenreit Wood, the house in the 1861 census records, is now probably named Bush Croft.

So the mystery of the house appears to be solved  :) but now I wonder why Tapenreit Wood is not named on maps? There's always something else to puzzle over!
