Thanks for the info about Biglands in Cumbria, but the census entry definitely looks like Monmouthshire.

Kind regards
Paul

As your man is in his 40s he must appear in some previous censuses, as Cas suggests; if you post his name some cunning Rootschatter might help to run him down for you.

Thanks for the suggestions.

As to his appearance on other any other census, he doesn't - or at least I've not found him.

As I say he is rather elusive.

His name is Philip TAYLOR.
He is listed in the 1861 census, as we know, as a general dealer in Chiswick.
I've not found him in the 1851 or 1841 census.
We know he had at least one child, a daughter Matilda TAYLOR, born 1849 in St Pancras, where on the birth cert he is described as a tailor - a perfect name TAYLOR the tailor.

There is a suggestion from other sources that he had a middle name John, hence Philip John TAILOR, but there is also another source that suggests he used the name George Philip TAYLOR.

Thanks again.
Paul

Possible bapt.

http://www.genuki.org.uk/cgi-bin/places?MON,SO390093,5,Bryngwyn very near Raglan.

Have you tried searching for Matilda in 1851, to see who she is with?

Only marriage within 1840 - 1849 all areas, ties in with Monmouth, but a number of spouses.

Marriages Jun 1841
TAYLOR    Phillip        Newport    26   149

Few for Philip, with one 'L'

Thanks Cas.

That Bryngwyn entry seems interesting- do you think is Bryngwyn is 'Bogland' for someone who could not understand or write a Welsh name place in 1861?

Matilda does not appear in the 1851 census as far as I can tell.
I've found her birth certificate, with Philip TAYLOR as father.
Mother is given as Eliza TAYLOR, late (what appears to read) REIDWIN, formerly GROOM.
I've not been able to find a marriage for Philip TAYLOR and an Eliza "REIDWIN".

Regards
Paul

I personally think it is Raglan, spelt Ragland, out of the area.

Could you post an extract of BC with the Eliza Reidwin bit, to see what others think, it may help

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/2NJ5-GWH Maybe a red herring but posting, maybe it is Redwin. Maybe they did not marry?
