Rachel,

Yes - The Streetview photo is near Waunfawr - and I suspect that "Allt" (the first picture) is on the same road - a bit higher up. You'd expect that the house "Allt" ('Hill') would be at the top or the bottom of a hill.

The writing appears all in the same hand - do you know who that was?

Sadly, I'm not too sure. The last piece of the puzzle is the following image I have--- seriously damaged over the years I have but a fragment. The name Jones is perhaps telling as Nellie's grandmother was possibly Elizabeth Jones d. 22 May 1918 in Garmon Wales.

To me it says in Welsh:

Owain Jones ty Da-
ar wraig. Ne-
Glan Gwifain,
Yn work
house
-

Owain Jones ty Da- (a name of a house - literally 'Good House'? if it is Da)
and wife. Ne- (don't know what that is)
Glan Gwifai (it's in capitals, so it's likely to be a proper noun, a Place or Name)
In Work
House
(these last two words are already in English)

PS It could just as easlily say "In Waen Fawr" for the last three words too!

It's a tricky one this - this is handwriting recognition and translation all in one - and I'm not great at either. :)

All photos seem to be from the same general area. So I suspect these people to be relatives Nellie left behind in Wales. She arrived in the USA in 1914 with a half sister Katherine last name possibly Owen.

Did you see my last reply?

The last photo had an Ilford stamp and a number on it.

Can you scan the front and back of these photos (Rather than photograph them) and post them on the Handwriting Recognition board and ask if they are from the same camera / printer? I rather suspect they may be? If you put a link to this post then it will save a bit of translation work.

It will take some time but I can do that. Again, thank you for the "above and beyond the call of duty" help :)
