Fitzpatrick
« on: Sunday 12 June 11 03:27 BST (UK) »
I am new to Irish research and don't know where to begin.  I have two links to Newtown-Butler, Fermanagh.    Michael Fitzpatrick was born about 1821.  His parents were Denis Fitzpatrick and Marjorie Godden or Golden.   Martha Denny was born about 1834.  They eventually married in Scotland.  They were Roman Catholic.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Judy

I am currently researching Fitzpatricks from Newtownbutler, however, the records are very poor for 1800's but I will see if I can find out anything matching your details for you.

You have information on Michael's parents - if you got this from his birth certificate did it give the townland where they lived? Also, do you know anything of Michael Fitzpatrick's siblings, or where they married or lived in Scotland? Every little bit of information helps so if you ca nthink of anything that would help ... let me know?

Hello ... just read your positing to me. Fitzpatrick is a very common name in Fermanagh and Cavan, and Patrick is in almost every RC family in Ireland! So many Patrick Fitzpatrick's will turn up in your searches!

You say that on Patrick's birth reg there is a date and place underneath his mother's details which may possibly be the marriage. Do you have his mother's details here as well as this date?

Yes, Newtownbuttal could well mean Newtownbutler. If he got married in 1858 in Newtownbutler it may be difficult to find his marriage details. I have looked into researching the church records in Newtownbutler, and if I can, I am going to be going to search for my great-grandfather who is also Fitzpatrick and married in 1857 in Newtownbutler. I am not sure exactly when this will be as I have to travel there, and it could be later in this year before I get to do this, but when I am doing this I could have a look for Patrick Fitzpatrick and Mary Little's marriage in 1858.

In the information you already have, are there any details of either Mary or Patrick's parent's names? Or even the sponsors who attended their wedding? Or even the townland where they lived? If you have any details like this, it may help me to see if I can find out anything else for you.

Hi paseo
All the info I have is what is on that thread, nothing else, which is info from the various census's and Scotland's People.

The Patrick F birth reg 1862 is the son of Patrick F n Mary Little and it is this latter Patrick F and Mary Little that married Newtownbutler March 1858.

I am hoping there are more details on the marriage registration, fingers crossed X'd.

Many thanks for replying and your offer of help, I await to hear from you in the future.

Regards

Marriage records for pre-registration period usually list few details- perhaps just date, bride & groom along with 2 witnesses.

Having said that you may not get much more than the couples names and their two witnesses. RC marriage records from that period don’t contain a lot of information.
