John Ferryman, father of Ruth
« on: Monday 26 May 14 21:46 BST (UK) »
Hello

Thanks to the help of some rootschatters, I found an ancestor named Ruth Ferryman, born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk in 1733 and died 1819.

Her parents were John and Ruth Ferryman. Whom were the parents of John Ferryman? I have found a record that records a John Ferryman being born in 1717, not sure its him though

I had a quick look for John Ferryman baptisms on freereg,http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/Search.pl.
None were early enough to be "your" John, but I did find a marriage:
   Great Yarmouth St Nicholas,19 Nov 1731 Jno.FERRYMAN Great Yarmouth-Bachelor
Ruth SHREVE Great Yarmouth-Widow  FileNumber   11753
This seems likely to be your couple. In which case, I would doubt whether the 1717 baptism is your John, unless he was several years old when he was baptised, of course.

Garrett- London, Berks

Harvey- Essex

The following all took place at St Nicholas Great Yarmouth :

John Ferryman 20 Mar 1701/2 John & Mary

John Ferryman 30 Jun 1706 John ? & Mary ? ( note the question marks are part of the transcript )

John Ferryman 28 Nov 1708 Chosel & Elizabeth

Chosel(l) appears to be a correct transcription as there are other births to this couple.

Burials which may help :

John Ferryman 24 Sep 1707 ( transcript says : "son of Chosell & Elizabeth ? " this appears to be inconsistent with the birthdate )

John Ferryman son of John & Martha 21 Oct 1718

John Ferryman son of John & Mary 23 Mar 1701/2

John Ferryman son of Chosel & Elizabeth 1 Mar 1710/11

That appears to leave John b 1706 s of John ? & Mary ? as the only survivor from the list of baptisms ,  but I am uncertain of the accuracy as John & Martha , for example ,  appear not to have married until 1722/3 - as always , a look at the actual registers would be preferable. You could try browsing the Archdeacons Transcripts on familysearch but they look a little off putting , especially without my glasses !

Good luck !

It states Ruth Shreve was a widow at the time of marriage, whom was her first husband?
