"evan ap ellissey ap william Pugh"

Hi,

The surname Pugh is generally considered to be derived from ap Hugh. The surname Pugh became fairly widely used in the early 1600s. I have found only a few records of  "ap Pugh"s on FindMyPast. I would like to know if "evan ap ellissey ap william Pugh" baptized 1640 son of Ellissey ap William Pugh" of Dinas Merionethshire.  GBPRS_WAL_004393904_00262 on FindMyPast, would likely have used the surname Pugh when naming his own children.

In other words, did the "fixed" surnames immediately replace the old patronymic names once the fixed surnames were applied, to the extent that "Ap"s in that family were no longer used at all? So that the above Evan would be most unlikely to call his children "Ap Ellissey"?

There are so many possibilities, such as Bevan "Ap Evan". I wonder if anyone has further comments on the names his descendants might have used.

Cheers,
Llanfi :-\ :-\ :)
