Help with Residence of Murdo Mackenzie
« on: Saturday 09 November 13 11:22 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
Kenneth Mackenzie, illegitimate, was born in Elgin, Moray on 20th Feb 1877. His mother was Isabella Ross, born Lochbroom, Ross shire.  His father is named as Murdo Mackenzie, Farmer. There is a Murdo Mackenzie, a farmer living at Lochbroom too. Can anyone help to decipher Murdo's residence?
Thanks, Mags

Hi Mags

1st part looks like Fannich Lodge, which is on the north shore of Loch Fannich.  Not sure about the word below that.

Thanks Lee. As you know there are lots of Murdo Mackenzie in that area. Had a look at the 1871 census and there is only one farmer, a farm of 9 acres, however just says Lochbroom. Isabella Ross was the daughter of Donald and Eliza Ross who lived at Dundonnell. Donald was a carpenter. Later, Isabella moved to Edinburgh to stay with her sister Williamina and family.
It's difficult when the area of the country is unfamiliar so thanks again. Just read the new 2 posts, thanks William and Josey.

The National Library of Scotland maps website gives you free access to hundreds of older maps of Scotland, including large-scale 19th century Ordnance Survey ones. Some allow you to switch from a modern satellite or road map to the old one to help find locations and compare the places then and now.

Apologies All,

I must have taken Berlin Bob's advice too seriously when I was learning how to add an image(help pages). Think I must have said "I can do it" too many times!
Thanks again for your help.

Hi Mags. Just found your post. I know exactly who Murdo Mckenzie is as he is a relative. He was the then future laird of Dundonnell. The child Kenneth was recognised in his will and Isabella received  a bequest  of £1000 for her and the child's  support. Murdo was the son of the laird at the time Dr Kenneth  McKenzie formerly of "Bundanon" in the Shoalhaven NSW  Australia. He died in 1878 and Murdo became laird. Regards David
