« on: Saturday 20 December 14 14:33 GMT (UK) »
In 1861 Joseph and Sarah Hayes and their three children are at 240 Sion St, Radcliffe, Lancs but I can't find Josep and Sarah in 1871. Their two youngest children Elizabeth Ann and William are with thieir maternal grandfather John Lewis in Waterfall Street, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant.

Joseph Heyes, 36 in 1861, Cotton Maker Up OR Dyer, Born Pilkington, Lancashire
Sarah Hayes (nee Lewis) 33 in 1861, Born Wales - possibly Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant.
John Hayes, (son) 9 in 1861, Drawer In, born Radcliffe, Lancs

Any help appreciated.

It's a good site as it automatically uses variations in the spellings without having to use a wildcard search.  I've found many entries there that I couldn't find on Ancestry

I didn't have the 1881 entry, Thanks. When their two youngest were in Wales in 1871 (the daughter married my G.Grandfather in 1881) I wanted to find out where the parents and the oldest child were: Lancashire 1861, Scotland in 1867, then back in Lancashire in 1871.

I can attribute moving from Wales to Lancashire and sending the younger children back there to their grandfather to the textile boom but don't quite see where a visit to Scotland fits in.

Joseph and Sarah Hayes had another daughter, Sarah Jane, in 1866 at Dunmore Place, Govan in Glasgow. At this time Govan was growing, it's population increasing more than tenfold from 9,000 to 95,000 and also had a dye-works (Wickipedia). Joseph Hayes gave his occupation as Cotton Dyer and Journeyman on Sarah Jane's birth certificate.
