Hermisheils - where is it?
« on: Wednesday 21 May 14 21:07 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

My ggg grandfather is Simon Stevenson and based on his occupation as Flax Merchant, I'm guessing a connection to the linen industry.

Based on a quick google search, I think this line may have come from Hermisheils, Scotland to Dungannon, Northern Ireland and back to Glasgow.

Before I flitter away more money on Scotland's People, can anyone help me narrow down where Hermisheils might be ...

Thanks in advance!

Hi

There are a few references to the name place, with some spelling variations perhaps.

There is:

DOUGLAS JEAN....widow of Captain John Stevenson, of Hermanshields, parish of Glassary Argyll http://www.rootschat.com/links/0zde/

There is also a reference to this Jean,as relict to this Captain John Stevenson on Scotlands People's Wills & Testament database in 1734

Also, www.archive.org/stream/scottishrecordso09scotuoft/scottishrecordso09scotuoft_djvu.txt

Good connection with place and name  :)

Is your line connected to this http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=malise&id=I11019 and http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=malise&id=I15045

Hi Monica,

Many thanks for the reply. It's funny - I had the marriage and death certs for Simon's son, Robert, for a few months but only recently took a proper look. That's where the occupation of Flax Merchant led me to Dungannon - and the rootsweb link. The street directories show a Simon & Robert Stevenson in the 1840s in the area.

I'll take a proper look at the weekend and add to my "to-do" list when I eventually get up to the PRONI.

Thanks again!

Sharon
