Arran? or on the way there?
« on: Tuesday 02 February 10 09:32 GMT (UK) »
I have been given some photographs which show my mother on holiday in about 1938. One of them shows them holding a board saying Kilmory when they were 'socialising' with some sailors. The others all show photos of people walking, with 'Walking Pictures" printed on the back.
Does anyone recognise the area?

Hello Manick and welcome to Rootschat.

Do you have any more photographs, with a bit more background. I'm sure there are several of us who would recognise various bits of Arran, if you have.

Jen :)

The last one looks as if there are tenements in the background so maybe Glasgow.

Where did your mum live?

She lived in Leith. All the new photos I've been given seem to be holiday snaps from when she was about 19 or 20, and so far the only clue is the name Kilmory on the board. I suppose the family could have been in Glasgow on the way to the coast. Here's another photo, obviously taken by a strolling photographer.

I have been looking at old photographs  of Greenock and Gourock, as possible starting places for a trip to Arran in the 1930s and 40s. The Francis Frith collections for both of these places are fairly extensive and Gourock does look possible but there is nothing definite enough to place your family, so far.

I am hoping that someone else will come along and give you some more positive help.

Jen

Hi,  your first photo looks like they are holding the sign that used to be on the front of the  buses. They all left from the pier at Brodick. If you look closely you will see "via west rd" under the Kilmory Circular writing.

Hope this might jog a few more memories with someone.

Mhomac.
