Stoke Bruerne parish records prior to 1700
« on: Thursday 11 December 14 15:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

The very comprehensive (hat's off to the transcribers) records for Stoke Bruerne on the Freereg site appear to start  about 1710.

Might anyone know if this is because that's as far back as the written records go, or might the parish records go back further?

Regards

John

The SOG Index of NTH Parish Regs indicates that St Mary Stoke Bruerne registers began in 1560.

Thanks Bryan, that is encouraging. I wonder though what state they are in the good folks at Freereg have not gone back that far?

The Stoke Bruerne parish registers (back to 1560) are at the Northamptonshire Record Office.  Have just had a quick look around their research services and it looks like you could possibly get a copy of an entry for under a tenner (including postage) - assuming that you're not within easy reach of Northampton!

Hi,

Thanks for all the kind replies. I may well be getting to Northampton Records office in the new few weeks, so will check out the records there.

My TARRY ancestors lived in Stoke Bruerne from Edward Arthur Tarry, born 1877 died 1956, to SARAH TARRY, 1753 to 1774. Sarah was the unmarried mother of JOHN THOMAS TARRY, 1770 to 1838.
I have not been able to verifiably identify the parents of SARAH. At present I have JOHN TARRY, 1721 to 1802, and Martha Moody, 1726 to ?, as SARAH's parents but this is a tenuous, and probably incorrect, link.
Sarah, known as Sarah of Stoke, would appear to have gained some notoriety having being excommunicated in 1727 for fornication.
Any info on SARAH who is my 4th Great Grandmother would be much appreciated.

Rob Tarry.

Hi Rob.

There does not seem to be a Sarah Tarry being baptised in Stoke but she is listed on Mary Taylor's web site here.  https://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=towcester&id=I25467

She may be on there, Sandy, but I've no idea where she came from!. Nor did the old Stoke Bruerne page:
