Where is Barmour? - completed
« on: Saturday 23 August 14 10:02 BST (UK) »
This is part of an apprentice document written in London in 1770 which refers to a James son of Peter Mather of Barmour (?), Northumberland.

I am hoping to link this James Mather to a family in Twizell/Norham; and there is a Peter Mather having children in Berwick between at least 1736 and 1744 (unfortunately I can't see a James, although Peter's father is supposed to be James), although the James in the document is likely to have been born c1758.

Several sites refer to a James son of Peter who went on to become a mayor in Louisiana, but I have no evidence of a connection. The first thing is to establish where Barmour is: the best I can come up with is Battle Moor.

Richard

There is a Barmoor in Northhumberland, could it be a misspelling of this place.
Regards Dave.

Just to mention that there is another Barmoor in Northumberland, just south of Morpeth, in case you wanted to consider it.
GLASS (Northumberland, Fife, Roxburghshire)
DOCKWREY (South Shields)
REDPATH (Northumberland, Oklahoma)
SOUTHERN, SUTHREN, SITHERN (North Northumberland)
DARLING (Carham)
