Photos of Wallsend High Street East, early/mid 20th Century?
« on: Thursday 18 September 14 15:20 BST (UK) »
Dear all.

Does anyone know of any useful sources (preferably online but interested in archives too) for old photos of Wallsend - specifically of the High Street - taken in the early-mid the 20th Century?

'Jackpot' would be a photo of number 215 High Street East (which I believe is roughly opposite the Town Hall) taken between the 1920s and 1960s, but I'm interested in any photos of the street.

Paul

Thank you, all, some excellent photos in there.

Would you believe the building I'm looking for is *just* off the edge of this photo from the Francis Frith site?

http://www.francisfrith.com/locations/wallsend/photos/wallsend-the-town-hall-1951-32343576

Assuming the numbering of the houses hasn't changed since the '50s, looking at the two shop fronts on the right - number 215 would be part of the adjoining building.

I've now discovered the names of some of the businesses which occupied the building I'm particularly interested in: 215 High Street East, Wallsend.
  • 1916, occupied by Mr J. Cosans, butcher
  • 1921, occupied by William Coupe, butcher
  • 1936, occupied by my ancestors W. and H. H. Stainthorp, butchers
Someone off-list has pointed me towards North Tyneside Libraries' collection of 50,000+ local photos [link] which I'll try next time I'm in the area.

They also have a good collection of trade directories [link] which might help me to narrow down the year when my great grandfather took it over.
