Do you have any idea how I can find birth records for William Lamb c1816 and his parents etc? I am not quite sure where to look, Free BMD only starts from a certain year and I want to try and go back as far as I can with the Lambs.

Thanks Ann

Have a look at IGI on www.familysearch.org - there's a likely christening (extracted from parish records) for him in Newington* :D

His marriage cert will confirm (or not!) his father's name  :)

*also a few possible siblings. To find them, once you have found William's christening, click on the batch number at the bottom of the page. Then under 'Father' and 'Mother', enter the father's first name and surname you have just found for William, mother's first name and hit 'search'. It will show you the other christenings in the same batch to the same parents.

Hi Tati,

Found William Lamb born 1817 Newington, parents Thomas Lamb and Ann.

Thank you, I wouldn't have done it without your guidance.

Best wishes Ann.

Very welcome  :D

If it's the correct William then this *could* be his mum (remember there was a brother John christened 1820)

1841
HO107/1064 10 41 20
St Mary Newington, Surrey
Camden Street

John Lamb, 22, Huxter, born in county
Ann Lamb, 45, born in county

I have found a possible marriage for Thomas Lamb and Ann Davis but not so sure as it is for 1830 Newington, but their first child was born 1815, I'm sure it wasn't good to be born out of wedlock or was it quite common,

Ann.

It's fun playing around on familysearch, isn't it?  8)

Now usually, you'd expect children born out of wedlock to be christened in the mother's name...

Given the IGI is unfortunately far from being complete, I'd keep the record in the 'possibles' folder but wouldn't bet too much money on it

It is fun  ;D

I have been having more of a look at possible earlier marriages and there is a few that dont state the place but have Thomas Lamb and a number of Ann's on there, again I think I will have to order another childs birth certificate just to get Ann's surname, but at least I am abit further.

I am amazed how far back these records go on Familysearch, very good site. :D

I hate to have to tell you, but birth certificates showing mother's maiden names didn't exist pre-1837 :-\
