Balcombe family,Ticehurst,Wadhurst
« on: Sunday 28 September 14 11:35 BST (UK) »
Hello, i am trying to find the possible illegitimate daughter of Jemima Balcombe.

13 November 1891 - Sussex Agricultural Express

James Mitten was summoned by Jemima Balcombe to show cause etc.

The parties were a single man and woman from Wadhurst and after hearing several witnesses the bench made an order for the defendant to pay 1s 6d per week until the child (a female) attains the age of 14 years and costs of £1 6s 6d.

There is a Mary Ann Balcombe born 1891 Ticehurst and died 1891 Ticehurst.
Has anyone researching the Balcombes come across Mary Ann or any other that might belong to Jemima,Apart from buying the birth cert for Mary Ann Balcombe is there anything else i could do?

Any help appreciated...Tim

Female births in Ticehurst district (of which Wadhurst is a parish):

March qtr 1891  Bertha Dancy Balcombe     Died December qtr 1891
June qtr 1891    Elsie May Balcombe
September qtr 1891    Isabel Balcombe
December qtr 1891    Mary Ann Balcombe    Died December qtr 1891

As Jemima is on her own (as a servant) in the 1891 census, and she has no child of the right age in 1901, then we are looking for an infant death, 1891-1901?

The daughter had to be alive long enough for Jemima to present her case - so my bet would be with Bertha? ;D ;D

Hello Tim

I have looked for Baptisums on SFHG,but some are missing :-X

I found Burial for a Mary Ann who was an Infant

A Bertha Dancy Balcombe was buried 28 Oct 1891 ,aged 9 Months at Ticehurst & seemed to come from Salehurst.

Like KGarrad,my bet is also on Bertha

Hi

Just a thought, unless there is definite proof that the baby died, it maybe that the child is still alive in 1901 but looked after by other family members.

Do you know Jemima's parents?  Might be worth following them or siblings to see if there is an odd child with them.

I think you can eliminate Isabel Balcombe.

She was baptised at Ticehurst on 4 Oct 1891 the daughter of Richard and Sarah.

Hi,

1891 for Bertha -

Elizabeth Jane Balcombe   71
Elizabeth Sarah Balcombe   26
Bertha Dancy Balcombe   granddaughter 3/12 b. Etchingham, Sussex

RG12 Piece 779 Folio 78 Page 1, Ticehurst.

It would be worth checking other census to see of Jemima is the daughter of Elizabeth Jane.

On Jemima's marriage record it shows her father as Benjamin -

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NNV1-1YW

1871 for the Balcombe family -

Benjamin Balcomb   55
Hannah Balcomb   45
Thomas Balcomb   22
Sarah Balcomb   14
Mary A Balcomb   12
John Balcomb   3

RG10 Piece 1051 Folio 105 Page 13, Ticehurst.

Hannah and Jemima are in the Union Workhouse, Ticehurst in 1881.

Therefore as Bertha Dancy Balcombe is living with her grandmother Elizabeth Jane in 1891 and that Jemima's mother is called Hannah then it's fair to presume that Bertha is not the child you are looking for.

Dear all,
Hello again, well i took a gamble on who the child of Jemima's might be,i thought possibly Mary Ann Balcombe because Jemima had an Aunty by the same name. The certificate finaly came through,BINGO
Mary Ann Balcombe was born 31st August 1891 the daughter of Jemima who was a domestic servant at Woods Green. No father! Sadly Mary Ann was buried on the 27th November 1891,

Another part of the jigsaw completed.
