In the 1841 census I found
John Robinson and maria Turner both age 20 working for a farmer John Price in Barwell.

Could this be another red herring?

Here's a strange thing?

1851 census:
Class: HO107; Piece: 2082; Folio: 69; Page: 31
Sharnford, Leicestershire

Robinson, John  Head  Unmarried  M  32  Farm Labourer  b Sharnford
Turner, Maria  Lodger  Unmarried  F  32  Char Woman  b Bagath
Turner, Mary Ann  Lodger  F  5  Daughter  b Sharnford
Turner, Thomas  Lodger  M  4  Son  b Sharnford
Bason, Susan  Lodger  Widow  F  86  Pauper  b Witick

So, It seems Maria Turner = Maria Bott, and Mary Ann and Thomas become Robinson - just as you said.

BUT, I can't find Turner births on FreeBMD?
BUT, I can find Robinson births!

December qtr 1845
Hinckley district     vol 15, page 59
Robinson, Mary Ann

March qtr 1847
Hinckley district     vol 15, page 70
Robinson, Tom

A bit more to add to the confusion

A sarah Bott marries a John Robinson in 1844

I found a Sarah Bott  born in Heather 1823 who had a brother William Bott born 1819 Heather.
This William I believe is the husband of Maria Turner who was born Bagworth. (Heather and Bagworth are close together)
So if I am right....The sister Sarah marries John Robinson, the brother William Marries Maria Turner, Sarah and William seem to disappear which leaves Maria to move in with John Robinson :o

If I was in your position(!) I would look to be buying a couple of birth certificates?

One of the earlier children (Mary Ann or Tom) and one of the later children (George?).
That will give you definitive proof of who their mother was (or mothers were?!).

So £18.50 to help solve a conundrum!
